Our upPE-T proposal presented to the topic CE-BIOTEC-09-2020 Upcycling Bio Plastics of Food and Drinks Packaging of the H2020 program has been funded among the 27 proposals presented at European level.
upPE-T will allow for the first time to transform plastic packaging waste into products with high added value, through biotechnological routes, which will be used in the development of biodegradable bioplastics for application in the manufacture of food packaging, contributing greatly to the European Economic Strategy Circular. At this time, we are in the process of processing the Grant Agreement, which will conclude with its signing with the European Commission, after which we will be able to start the execution of the project
Multilayer plastic films are widely used as industrial packaging for the protection of fruit and vegetables. Despite their tremendous benefits in the storage, transport and preservation of food, associated environmental concerns are growing. More than half of plastic waste created in Europe comes from packaging. In this context, the EU-funded Agro2Circular project will develop the first recycling value chain for post-industrial multilayer films based on a synergistic approach. It will combine innovative sorting, physical delamination, enzymatic depolymerisation, decontamination and mechanical recycling. To address a lack of digitalisation in the agri-food sector, the project will employ a Data Integration System as a digital tool to ensure traceability and as a predictive decision tool.
